Friend and Advocate
My guess is you have several friends. If they are many, I am also guessing a few of them are extra close with you, and you might even have one friend who is closest of all. A friend that is your closest is probably one who will be at your side, no matter what, and who will protect and defend you. You can call upon your friend, and this beloved one can call upon you. It is because of love.
The most extraordinary feature of the Christian revelation is the enmity with God that a person might fear is turned into a relation of love and advocacy. To befriend Jesus in the relationship of disciples and Teachers is to come into friendship with the Son of God. At one point in John’s Gospel, Jesus clarifies to his disciples, “I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.” (John 15:15)
Just think of a friend! You call out to God and are heard. You come to desire deeply to serve God and labor in the causes of God. This is because of the nature of your relationship with God. Jesus has made it a wonderfully intimate friendship, with the strength of love. This is how I see the nature of things in the 91st Psalm. It will be part of our experience this coming weekend in the Eucharist. We will say this psalm together. Look at a couple of the verses of Psalm 91, it is the voice of God, speaking of the beloved. Put in the pronoun that fits for you:
14 Because he is bound to me in love,
therefore will I deliver him; *
I will protect him, because he knows my Name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; *
I am with him in trouble.
That is the nature of your intimate connection with God. It will help you to think this way, pray this way, listen, and respond to God with such intimacy and advocacy. Foster the thought that God has made it come about that you are bound to God in love, that you will be delivered. You will hear the answer when you call upon God. It is so with your best human friend, it shall be so between you and the Holy One.
